She had an incredible passion, drive and dedication to student leadership. After her death in 2003, the awards were named in her honor to recognize her many contributions to student life at Case Western Reserve University.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Organization Officer award is given to a graduate student in a recognized student organization who serves in an executive role, goes above and beyond responsibilities to consistently improve their organization, works to create programs, policies, or services to make the campus community better, encourages others in the organization and helps members to achieve their personal goals and potential, and creates partnerships and builds bridges to maintain sustainable growth on or off campus.

Slentz served as the 2015-2016 President of the Graduate Student Council, the legislative body representing all graduate students at Case Western Reserve University. The GSC lobbies the University administration for policy changes on behalf of graduate students, plans social and professional events for graduate students, and serves as a resource to all graduate students seeking information, assistance, and/or outlets for involvement.
