Time: 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Location: Guilford Parlor

Ph.D. candidate Marcus Mitchell will give his job talk on Friday, November 6, 2015 as part of the English Department’s colloquium series. After providing a brief overview of his dissertation work, Mitchell will present the lecture “The ‘Fresh Complications’ of Muscular Women in Victorian Sensation Fiction.”

This lecture considers depictions of muscular women in selected sensation novels in conjunction with early and recent scholarship on the generic tensions of sensation fiction. The figure of the muscular woman challenged traditional formulations of womanhood in ways that parallel the sensation novel’s challenges to the aesthetic and formal conventions of Victorian literature.
